Five Daily Prayers
Posted: 15 Jun 2023
We understand that maintaining the five daily prayers can be challenging at times, but we should encourage ourselves to persevere and embrace the immense benefits that come with this fundamental act of worship.
Let's explore some of the motivations and rewards mentioned in the Quran and Hadiths:
Connection with Allah: The five daily prayers provide an opportunity to establish a direct and intimate connection with our Creator. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:45), Allah says, "And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah]." Through regular prayer, we humble ourselves before Allah, seeking His guidance, mercy, and forgiveness.
Spiritual Cleansing and Peace of Mind: Prayer serves as a means of spiritual cleansing and purification. In Surah Al-Ma'ida (5:6), Allah says, "O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles." This physical purification is symbolic of purifying our hearts and minds, allowing us to find inner peace and tranquility.
Protection from Evil: Consistent prayer acts as a shield against evil influences and temptations. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said in a Hadith narrated by Muslim, "The five daily prayers and the Friday prayer until the Friday prayer are expiation for what is between them, as long as one does not commit major sins."
Increased Barakah (Blessings) in Life: Allah promises an abundance of blessings and provisions for those who fulfill their prayers regularly. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:29), Allah says, "O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty."
Strengthening of Faith: Consistency in prayer strengthens our faith and deepens our relationship with Allah. It serves as a reminder of our purpose in life and our ultimate accountability to Him. In a Hadith narrated by Bukhari and Muslim, the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said, "The first matter that the slave will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound. And if it is bad, then the rest of his deeds will be bad."
Guidance and Direction: By establishing a regular prayer routine, we seek Allah's guidance in all aspects of our lives. In Surah Al-Fatihah (1:6-7), we recite, "Guide us to the straight path, the path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray." Through prayer, we seek His guidance to navigate through the challenges of life and follow the righteous path.
Remember, even if it may seem difficult initially, take small steps towards establishing the five daily prayers. Seek support from fellow believers, set reminders, and create a dedicated space for prayer. The rewards and benefits mentioned above are just a glimpse of the countless blessings that await those who commit to the regular practice of prayer. May Allah grant us strength, motivation, and consistency in fulfilling this important act of worship.
